Two historic resort hotels a mile apart in southern Indiana's hill country, built around 19th-century mineral springs — including a domed atrium once called the Eighth Wonder of the World.
Why Go
French Lick Springs Hotel and West Baden Springs Hotel have been drawing visitors since the Gilded Age, when guests came to 'take the waters' at the mineral springs beneath both towns. West Baden's centerpiece is its atrium: a 200-foot dome, built in 1902 and billed as the Eighth Wonder of the World, that remained the largest free-span structure in the country until the Astrodome. Both hotels fell into decline through the 20th century — West Baden was nearly lost before Indiana Landmarks and the Cook family restored it, reopening in 2007. Today the two hotels operate together as French Lick Resort. Complimentary shuttles connect the resort properties and local community, while a restored historic rail trolley also runs between the hotels on a more limited schedule. Beyond the hotels themselves, the resort offers multiple golf courses, including championship courses designed by Pete Dye and Donald Ross, along with two spas, casino gaming, and family activities.
